A poem, Strange Times
Saturday, 4th April 2020
THOUGH packed with people
Hampstead Heath is silent today –
like it’s holding its breath,
even the dogs seem subdued,
everyone keeping their distance
two metres away from other walkers.
Although bright sunshine warms us,
The Royal Free grey and grim
bearing down in the distance
reminds us that life is frail and fleeting.
Why stop for coffee if it may be
the last cup you drink?
Why buy a cake
when just one bite
might seal your fate?
No planes break conversation,
birdsong can once again heard,
blossom blooms hopefully
against a bright blue sky,
early Spring sunshine dazzles
on rippling ponds,
Daffodils shake their yellow heads
as if to say –
All should be right with the world –
But it’s not today.
