THAMES Water chiefs should replace ageing Victorian water mains in Islington in the next 15 years, a leading councillor has said.

Richard Greening, chairman of Islington Council’s policy and performance scrutiny committee, has made a raft of recommendations in a report following last year’s floods in Angel.

He proposes that the water company should replace Islington’s ageing mains network in the next 15 years, improve its response to emergencies and set up an emergency line so that leaks can be reported directly to Thames Water by the public.

Cllr Greening also proposed that “improved technologies be investigated and put in place” to detect the likelihood of bursts at major trunk mains in Islington.

Millions of gallons of water gushed from a burst main down Camden Passage, Islington’s antiques quarter, on December 5 last year.
