Once again our older folk will be marginalised here

Friday, 24th December 2021

• AFTER so much consultation and goodwill it is distressing to see the many weaknesses in the Holloway Prison site redevelopment building plans that have been submitted to Islington Council.

Once again older people will be marginalised. There is no community facility on the site for them, even while we all know about the collapse of day centres and services for older people.

I note there will be extra care housing. This is good. But one of the biggest contributors to ill health is social isolation.

Everyone needs places to meet, to chat, have a cuppa or a meal together. No provision has been made for older people or the community at large to do this.

The Women’s Centre simply will not be big enough. And, anyway, there’d be too much competition on the use of only one indoor public space.

I trust the council will do the right thing and support a high-spec, environmentally friendly, and inclusive development that enhances people’s health.

I trust that it will not fall on its laurels, saying how well it did to partner with a housing association rather than a private developer.

Our councillors need to act on our behalf and not be swayed by big business.
