FOR more than a year, cycle trainers have had to live hand to mouth, never sure if they would be getting paid from month to month after funding uncertainty rumbled on amid all-out war between Transport for London (TfL) and the Government.

Amid that uncertainty, cycle instructors warned the industry would be decimated as those with most experience left to find more security.

Now, trainers – and the parents who feared their children would miss out on learning to cycle – can breathe a sigh of relief after TfL announced a £2.7million package for cycle training after a funding agreement was reached with the Government.

Suami Rocha, an Islington cycling instructor, said: “We welcome the news from TfL that funding has been agreed for the long term – the next two years – which reassures the industry and the workforce.

“We’re glad to go back to work and have security in three months’ time, six months’, nine months’ time. Now that there is some security in funding we should address the working conditions and real-terms pay cut that instructors have been facing for a very long time.”

Will Norman, London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, said: “The Mayor and I are determined to continue building a cleaner, greener London for everyone and this includes making cycling as accessible as possible.”
