The U3A walks are social occasions as well as a chance to enjoy fresh air
A WALKING group celebrated clocking up nearly 5,000 miles over 10 years as Islington pensioners completed their 500th walk – the Dollis Valley Greenwalk – which stretches from Mill Hill to the northern part of Hampstead Heath.
Islington U3A was started in 2014 with the aim of making sure those not in full-time employment could keep their minds sharp and their bodies active through a host of fun activities, including yoga, crosswords, and trips to the opera.
The walking group has become popular among members, with many saying that it offers sociability as well as the chance to get out in the fresh air.
Members at the hike on Friday spoke of the “camaraderie, inclusiveness, teamwork, friendship and fun” that the long walks have brought to their lives.
Jenny Ridley, who has been a member since 2018, said: “I enjoy it immensely. I’ve got an awful lot out of it, especially the longer walks. We have one a week and I try to do them all”.
Ms Ridley added that walk leaders normally test the routes in advance to make sure the pubs are open to stop at and have some lunch.
“It’s a very sociable thing,” she added. “We’ve got several members over 80 who are still fit and walking”.
U3A has a series of walking groups to cater for all abilities, and even hosts long weekends away for their most committed members.
“In May we’re going to the Isle of Wight, and in September we’re going to the Yorkshire Dales,” said Ms Ridley. “The walks are all great fun.”
