The National Health Service is a constant but others include our railways system, our roads, our flood defences, our legal system, and – shockingly in the past week – our system for protecting children. And with each cash-strapped sector comes a call for a public inquiry.

My public inquiry covers the lot and is simply this: “Why do we persist in electing governments that starve our essential social services of resources?”
