Aarrgh… Now we don’t know who to support?

MOST of us don’t need a millisecond to tell you who we want to win Sunday’s European Championships final – England, after all, are on the brink of making football history.

But in one corner of Islington, it’s perhaps unsurprisingly not so clear cut: welcome to Little Italy.

In the area around Clerkenwell Road, a traditional gathering point for Italians who had moved to London, there are mixed emotions about the big match.

Eighty fans were glued to a screen at a deli in the district when Italy beat Spain on Tuesday. More are expected for the tournament’s grand finale against England on Sunday.

One worker at L Terroni and Sons says he is especially torn and doesn’t know who he wants to win.

Alan Chan, who you might recognise from a belting performance on The Voice talent show last year, said: “I used to feed the homeless who would queue up at the church next door [St Peter’s Italian Catholic Church] and that’s when I connected with the community here. The Italian community welcomed me here. I am Chinese British and I support England but I also support Italy too.”

Mr Chan works two days a week at the deli.

“The energy I get from here I recycle and give out to our customers,” he said.

“I love this place. I have more Italian friends than I do Chinese friends. It is my second home – this is my adopted family.”

Meanwhile, Osman Cakir is the owner of La Casetta Cafe, an Italian eatery in Clerkenwell Road.

He had previously worked at Italian restaurant Goodfare in Parkway for 10 years in the kitchen.

He said: “I am Turkish and I support England on the inside but whilst I am here, I support Italy.

“People are watching this all over the world and it is exciting.”

Mr Cakir added: “On Sunday most things down this road are shut but we are open. People who are going to St Peter’s Italian Catholic Church come here afterwards.”
