LONG-TIME Barnsbury resident Su Pollard was named the new British Music Hall Society president this week.
The entertainer, who is set to play Snow White in this year’s pantomime season, said she was “delighted” to be asked and is proud to be the first female president of the
60-year-old society.
Describing how she was asked to take on the presidency while attending a memorial for Hi-De-Hi co-star Ruth Madoc last month, she said: “I thought, well, the main thing is, they hopefully want to feel that they’ve got the best person for the job.
“I’m thrilled to bits because I get to wear a medallion with the president’s outfit.”
She joked that now she was “in office” and added: “I feel I’ve earned my spurs now actually, because I’ve been in the business 50 years in January. I just feel, you know, it might be rather nice to be able to do that.”
Paying tribute to the two most recent presidents who went before her, she described Roy Hudd as “lovely” and Paul O’Grady as a “marvellous friend”.
The British Music Hall Society was set up in 1963 to protect the heritage of popular entertainment and Victorian-era theatres.
Ms Pollard will mark 40 years of living off Liverpool Road in February.
