St Mary’s Primary School pupil Alexandra is fundraising for The Little Princess Trust

A 10-YEAR-OLD girl who has never had a haircut is set to donate her locks to a wig-making charity, after seeing her school friends go through cancer treatment.

Alexandra, a student at St Mary’s Primary School, will brave the cut at Montage on Essex Road in aid of The Little Princess Trust, which provides free wigs to children and young people who have lost their hair during chemotherapy treatment.

Her mother, Fredericka Whitehead, said: “She hasn’t had it cut since birth. I am very proud of her but slightly terrified. She’s had 10 years of having long, blonde curly hair; it’s her baby hair! But for several months she’s been saying she wants to do it.”

Alexandra’s school friends have now “fully recovered and rung the bell,” Ms Whitehead added – but after seeing them lose their hair in the process, she decided she would “take off 12 inches”, the necessary length to make a wig for a child.

Alexandra might even inspire more charity fundraising among her peers.

“There have been loads of ‘Go on girl!’ messages on WhatsApp, she’s really enjoying that,” said Ms Whitehead. But another mother has said she would do it with her kids – ‘when you’ve done it, I’ll do it’.”

Alongside donating her hair, Alex and her mother are aiming to fundraise £700, the cost required to make a wig to provide for a child.

Any additional funds will be donated by the Little Princess Trust towards research in partnership with The Children and Young People’s Cancer Association.
