AN oral history project documenting workers’ experiences during the Islington nursery strike is trying to track down people involved in the demonstration outside the Town Hall.

It is more than 40 years since 154 nursery workers from 12 separate council-run daycare centres walked out on indefinite strike. They were asking the Town Hall for better pay and conditions, including that there was at least one worker for every four children.

After three months of demonstrations Islington Council, then led by Margaret Hodge, finally conceded, and a maximum ratio of 1:4.5 was achieved in council nurseries, and 26 more members of staff were recruited.

On The Record, a Caledonian Road-based oral history project, is searching for people with memories of the strike, especially workers, parents and children from the nurseries.
