Arsenal boss Arteta: ‘We need the fans with us’
Gunners set to face Man United at the Emirates after win at Chelsea

MIKEL Arteta is calling on Arsenal fans to make their presence felt tomorrow (Saturday) when Manchester United visit the Emirates Stadium for a lunchtime kick-off.
Victory would see the Gunners leapfrog rivals Tottenham into fourth in the Premier League table – putting pressure on Antonio Conte’s side ahead of their evening match at Brentford.
There should be a real buzz around Holloway following Wednesday night’s win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
After three successive defeats, Hale End Academy products Eddie Nketiah, who scored twice, Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka helped stop the rot as they all found the back of the net in much-needed 4-2 victory.
Arteta said his players “gave something back to the fans” in their performance, before making it clear he was hoping to get a little more back this weekend when United come calling.
“We scored four goals [against Chelsea] with our academy players, which is unique and great,” boasted the Gunners boss.
“For our fans, the only thing I can say is what I have said all season – in good and difficult moments, they have been right behind the team.
“I know that we have disappointed them in the last few weeks with the results that we’ve had, so thankfully [against Chelsea] we give them something back. This victory is for them.”
“I’m now thinking about Manchester United,” Arteta added. “And we tell them [the fans] that they have to be at Emirates Stadium with us on Saturday, because we don’t have time to recover and they need to be really noisy and loud to help us win the match. We are going to need our people to turn up and make the Emirates a real place.”
After capping a man-of-the-match display against Chelsea with his first Premier League double, Nketiah is expected to keep his place in Arsenal’s starting line-up against United. The 22-year-old striker is out of contract in the summer, and has reportedly already turned down offers to extend his stay at the Emirates.
Quizzed on whether he wants Nketiah to remain at the club, Arteta said: “If there is one player that I have been unfair with, I think it is him. He has given me every reason to do something different – so if Eddie hasn’t played more, it’s my fault and because as a manager I have missed something or I haven’t had the courage to play him more. Today [against Chelsea] he showed me again how wrong I was.”
Nketiah recently told the Beautiful Game Podcast: “There have been offers of a new contract but at the moment my aim is to play football and play regularly.
“That’s my ambition and that’s what I hope to do, but at the same time, I’m at Arsenal, I love Arsenal.”
