ARSENAL have been crowned the set-piece specialists of Europe, but Mikel Arteta insists his free-scoring squad “are dangerous from every angle”.
The Gunners continued their seemingly unstoppable tactic of overwhelming opponents from corners on Wednesday night when Jurrien Timber and William Saliba both added the finishing touches to devilish deliveries to seal a 2-0 victory over Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium.
Next up comes a trip to Craven Cottage this Sunday to take on a Fulham side boasting a trio of former Arsenal players in Emile Smith Rowe, Reiss Nelson and Alex Iwobi. It’s a ground where the Gunners lost 2-1 last season despite taking an early lead, so Arteta isn’t about to take the away day lightly.
“We want to have the right to win games, and if we perform the way we are performing right now, we are going to win a lot of games,” said the Arsenal boss. “Now it is about Fulham, we have to go there and we know the experience of last season. We’re going to have to prepare really well to earn the right to win there.”
Reflecting on his team’s current success from set-pieces, Arteta added: “I think we want to be very dangerous and very effective from every angle and every phase of play. We have worked on all of that.
“We couldn’t score from open play [against United] like we did against West Ham, [and] against Sporting, so the team really has belief that from every angle we have the mentality to threaten the opponent and to try to score.
“I think last year we scored the most goals in the history of this football club, not because only the set-pieces but because a lot of things that we have.
“We want to create individual moments, magic moments – a lot of players can create their own goals. We can create goals on short counters, long counters, against slow build-ups, when we have to have restarts and the opportunity to open the opposition. Every single phase of play, just maximise it and keep working on it, keep improving.”
The victory over United was made all the sweeter by the news that Liverpool had been held to a 3-3 draw at Newcastle, meaning that Arsenal have moved to within seven points of the Premier League leaders.
But Arteta made it clear that he’s not too worried about results elsewhere, and that for now it’s all eyes on this weekend’s London derby.
He said: “I didn’t know [that Liverpool had dropped points] as I was so happy celebrating in the dressing room. We got that news, but it is very difficult to win this league, and it is still very early.
“I think we have to look at our own business, try to perform as we are at the moment, and find ways to win the game. I think the team deserves a win again today [against United] which is very good, and what the opposition does we cannot control that.
“You can see week in, week out even if teams are winning how difficult it is for everyone.”
