BOTH the police and Arsenal football club are investigating an alleged racist incident in a pub during the north London derby on Sunday after an Arsenal fan claimed she was the victim of racist abuse at the hands of Arsenal fans.
Katie Price, a comedian, said she and a friend were watching the Arsenal match against Tottenham at The Cally pub in Caledonian Road when she heard a fellow Arsenal fan use an offensive word about Jews. After asking him to stop, she claims she and her friend were shouted at and pushed before staff asked them to leave, despite being informed they were the victims of abuse.
She claimed The Cally patrons chanted “Off you go” and “Y*ddo go home” as she was led out. The pub has denied they were aware any racism occurred and said they will provide CCTV and cooperate with the police.
Ms Price, who shares a season ticket to the club with her mother, said: “The ball is in Arsenal’s court now and I would like to see them – a call from the top down, the players, the execs – say to their fans, this is not how we behave.”
The Cally’s manager, Edmond Toska, said he regretted staff had not been told of racism and insisted they would have called the police had they known.
He added: “I heard no chanting because I was busy. I wanted to stop the fighting – they were pushing. My priority was health and safety. Our staff didn’t tell her or them to leave; in any situation when there is a fight we have a priority to make sure there is no fight – you can’t keep both parties inside – you have to take one party outside.”
Police said they would review CCTV footage and appealed for witnesses from the pub to come forwards.
A statement said: “Officers have made an appointment to speak to the woman and will be progressing this.”
Arsenal issued a statement which said: “We were appalled to hear of an incident at The Cally pub in Islington, involving anti-Semitic chants.
“We recognise the impact this behaviour has on our many Jewish supporters and others and condemn the use of language of this nature, which has no place in our game or society.”
It added: “Anyone identified will receive a lengthy club ban and their details will be passed to the police to commence legal proceedings.”
Police said anyone with information can call 101 and quote CAD3603/16Jan.
