Nuno Tavares has enjoyed his season in France

GOALSCORING full back Nuno Tavares has banged in his sixth goal of the season over the weekend as he continues to enjoy a loan spell at Marseille.

The question will soon have to be answered over what happens when that agreement expires at the end of the season. Tavares loves to bomb forward at right back but there were concerns about his defensive duties when he arrived at the Emirates Stadium from Benfica.

And in the fly-on-the-wall documentary, All Or Nothing: Arsenal on Amazon Prime, it became clear that there were worries about how he was settling and, despite his aggressive style of play, he appeared shy and reserved behind the scenes.

Tavares has played 22 times for Mikel Arteta but was pulled off the pitch by the Gunners manager in an FA Cup defeat against Nottingham Forest last season; at that time Forest were a Championship club.

In France, Olympique Marseille look unlikely to catch Paris St-Germain but have had a good season in the upper slots of Ligue One. Tavares got his sixth in 20 games last night (Sunday) away at Toulouse. It was a crucial third goal in a 2-3 success.

He had been in the provisional Portuguese squad for the winter World Cup in Qatar but did not travel having missed out on the final choices.

When he returns to Arsenal at the end of the season, he will find Ben White – the £50 million England international – and Takehiro Tomiyasu involved in a friendly tussle to play at right back, although White is also cover for central defence should William Saliba or Gabriel get injured or suspended. Rob Holding is the more likely selection in the latter scenario.
