AFTER months of uncertainty – and a mailbag full of letters decrying its possible end – a happy ending appears in sight for Islington’s largest arts centre.

Candid Arts Trust in Torrens Street, Angel, was plunged into financial crisis last year when noise from a nearby construction site caused it to lose thousands of pounds in revenue from bookings to use its building.

And after going public with the news it would likely go under without an immediate cash injection, its supporters banded together in their droves to call on the developer Tishman Speyer to dig deep to save it. This week Candid’s founder Duncan Barlow described a meeting with Tishman’s as “very constructive”.

He added: “Basically we’re putting together a proposal to try and work something out where they can sponsor some activities to help us through. I’m feeling positive.”

He praised Emily Thornberry, the Islington South MP, for her support.

“One of the directors of Tishman Speyer’s Angel Square was there, and their team seemed very receptive. And that’s because because of Emily Thornberry. She made it clear that we’ve had a hard time,” Mr Barlow said.
