Ballet dancer’s death: taxi driver is cleared

Friday, 21st April 2017

A TAXI driver involved in a collision which killed dancer Jonathan Ollivier has been cleared of causing death by dangerous driving.

The 38-year-old ballet star suffered serious head injuries and died at the scene in Farringdon in August 2015.

Abdul Qayyum, 44, was found not guilty at the Old Bailey on Tuesday.

The prosecution claimed Mr Qayyum should have stopped his Mercedes S Class at a give-way sign before driving across Farringdon Road to Ray Street.

But the driver, from Slough, Berkshire, insisted he did not see Mr Ollivier, who was travelling at 50mph in a 30mph zone. “I didn’t see him because he was too fast. The time when I looked I did not see him,” Mr Qayyum said.

The dancer was on his way to Sadler’s Wells Theatre, in Clerkenwell, for the final performance of The Car Man.
