Gillian Tindall
• MONDAY May 4 was the birthday of Gillian Tindall and I wanted to thank her, through your pages, for giving us such reading pleasure with her books, especially The Fields Beneath.
It such a wonderful read about Kentish Town and chronicles the vandalism inflicted on the area in the 1960s by the then local authority and indeed the government.
I served and lived there as a police constable from 1958 through the destructions until the 1970s and saw the devastation at first hand and found it so very depressing as communities were torn apart in the name of “progress”!
Many of the families I got to know through my work were displaced sadly.
I just love Kentish Town, it has an amazing history and has a huge place in my heart, I often return for walks through its back streets. Happy days!
Happy Birthday Gillian and thanks!
