Bike hangar is not being used, say Highbury residents
Neighbours want figures from the council

Neighbours in Crossley Street have questioned Islington’s locations for the hangars
RESIDENTS of a small picturesque street in Highbury say they have too many bike hangars for demand.
The neighbours, who between them have lived in Crossley Street for more than 120 years, say they have had confusing messages from the Town Hall over how many people have actually signed up to use them.
They say the hangars are unsightly and unnecessary if they are not being used.
One of the hangars in Crossley Street is directly outside a disabled man’s home. Eddie Catt uses a mobility scooter and says he now has to wait to get out of his home whenever someone is using the hangar.
“We want that hangar gone for starters,” said resident Val Hammond, about one of the facilities which they claim is permanently empty. “We want proper numbers because our research absolutely does not match up with the council’s .”
Islington’s environment chief Councillor Rowena Champion insisted bike use in the borough was increasing and secure parking was essential.
She said: “We all have a role to play in tackling the climate emergency, and something as simple as leaving the car at home and taking more journeys on foot or wheel can make a huge difference. That’s why secure cycle storage is so important.”
