A NEW multi-faith prayer garden was opened by a bishop at a Barnsbury school last week.

Over 150 children and parents gathered at St Andrew’s C of E primary school as the Rt Revd Rod Green opened the garden (above). The new space will be open to all children, regardless of their faith or culture, as a space for prayer, reflection and calm. The garden was designed by children and staff from the school, under the keen eye of teaching assistant Georgina McMeekin.

Bishop Rod said: “This is the first plaque I’ve unveiled since arriving in the Stepney Diocese, so it is something I will always remember. The garden is a beautiful space for prayer and reflection right in the centre of the school grounds.”

Headteacher Richard Smith, who initiated the project, said: “Our school has been called an oasis in the city by Ofsted.

“The prayer garden will give children a chance to take time out and think about something more than the everyday. It’s in the middle of the grounds, not tucked away out of sight. We are so pleased to welcome Bishop Rod to bless it.”

The children asked teachers for coloured flowerpots, wind-chimes and a chalk board to write down thoughts, along with specially curated plants to make the garden a special sanctuary.
