Brexit is completely pointless – apart from boosting the careers of a small group of politicians

• TWO things have emerged from the Brexit correspondence. First, when Brexiteers say something about the EU, it is always incorrect. Brexit is a flight from an EU that exists only in their imaginations.
Second, no justification for Brexit, when looked at closely, is advantageous to anyone. A good example is when Stephen Southam says: “The truth is the customs union is a barrier to trade, principally targeting imports from the Third World.”, (Be careful what you wish for in Europe, March 2).
The truth is that, under the 2000 Cotonou Agreement (which succeeded earlier agreements) the EU has trade arrangements with some 78 developing countries under which products from them can enter the EU duty-free.
Under Brexit, the UK will cease to be part of those arrangements and re-erect trade barriers against the Third World that currently don’t exist. That is waving two fingers at developing countries.
Theresa May’s recent speech makes it clear that, on the most optimistic assumptions, Brexit will leave the UK worse off. So Brexit is completely pointless – apart from boosting the careers of a small group of politicians.
