Bringing services in-house is to be welcomed

• I AM sure the vast majority of people reading this will have been outraged at P&O’s sacking of 800 workers.
We should all stand in solidarity with them and support their trade unions: RMT and Nautilus.
As we have local elections next week, it’s worth reminding people that actions like those of P&O are far from unique.
Back in 2006 Care UK sacked more than 100 care workers and re-engaged some of them on less than half of their salary. They did this with the support of the Liberal Democrats who, at the time, were in charge of the council.
I am pleased that the Islington Labour group and current council leadership have renewed their pledge to bring more services back in-house so that staff can benefit from improved terms and conditions.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, care workers have put themselves at risk. They deserve better terms and conditions, for instance full sick pay so that both staff and residents can be kept safe.
UNISON will continue to fight for care workers and for services to be brought in-house.
Use your vote wisely and don’t vote for parties that have a record of attacking local government workers, workers that have kept services going and are still keeping them going during this pandemic.
