ARSENAL club captain Martin Odegaard rushed out to get a copy of Islington’s best-read local newspaper on Friday – as news of his new contract with the Gunners broke.

The deal was revealed in adverts taken out in the Islington Tribune and the Drammens Tidende, the local newspaper in the star midfielder’s home town in Norway.

It was Odegaard’s way of showing how much he feels at home in north London after his move from Real Madrid two years ago.

Always seen as highly promising as a youth player, he was unable to break into the first team in the Spanish capital.

Adverts were placed in Martin Odegaard’s main local papers in Islington and his home town in Norway

But he’s gone from strength to strength in the red and white of Arsenal, and is now not only the captain but also the highest-paid player.

He has now signed on the line for a five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium.

He said it was an “easy decision”, adding: “My story is a bit different maybe, as I moved around different clubs since I was 16. At Arsenal, since the first day, I’ve felt great and this is definitely my home now.”

Odegaard was unable to celebrate his new contract with victory against the old rivals, Spurs, on Sunday – with a close fought north London derby ending in a 2-2 draw.
