A POPULAR chippy backed my more than 700 people who signed a petition against its closure is to be turned into a flat, planning chiefs have said.

Officials have granted permission to the landlord of York Way Fish Bar for the change of use despite a massive public backlash.

The takeaway has been run by a family that has lived in the area for decades and served residents on the Maiden Lane Estate.

A similar application was dismissed by the council last year, when business owner Dursan Nalbant told the Tribune: “I’ve been here so long I remember before when this road was a veg market.”

Council officials in Camden approved the revised plans last month and the takeaway shop will be turned into a three-bedroom maisonette.
