SOUL in the City, the annual festival hosted by St Mary’s Church in Islington’s Upper Street, returned this week with a quiz night themed around refugees.

Tonight (Friday), the festival continues with a free music and poetry event featuring jazz pieces, opera duets, sacred choral music and poems. Those who wish to attend the 7.30pm performance are asked to register in advance.

Tomorrow, a family fun day will include a visit from one of Islington’s finest fire engines, a bouncy castle, live music, face painting and a free forecourt café. The event starts at 1pm.

And on Sunday, the church will host a neighbourhood community celebration from 1pm.

The afternoon includes a history walk, a “meet and greet” with local charities working with refugees and migrants, food and live music. The afternoon will finish with worship at 3pm.

The Rev Simon Harvey said: “We are delighted to be hosting Soul in the City once again. St Mary’s Church is at the heart of Islington and we want to reach out to everyone in our parish and beyond. Whether they bring their children down to the fun day, reserve a seat at the opera or just pop down for a cup of tea and a chat we would love to see all our neighbours over the weekend.”
