JEREMY Corbyn’s supporters are being warned against complacency.

Although the Tribune understands that there were 200 canvassers for the independent candidate knocking on doors in the constituency on Sunday, the campaign wants to double that number in the final run-up to the election.

Political commentator Owen Jones (pictured), who says that he “desperately wants the Corbyn campaign to win,” said this week that people were unaware of the challenges.

“People think they don’t need to canvass because they think he’ll walk it,” Mr Jones told the Tribune.

“But people over-estimate how engaged people are.”

Mr Jones explained that the Corbyn supporters who think he’s in for a sure-fire win have failed to consider a number of obstacles.

These include the high turnover of residents in Islington, the advanced canvassing machinery that the Labour Party has access to, and a general lack of political engagement among voters.

“Labour has a massive amount of data in every constituency,” Mr Jones said. “They have data, and they’re throwing a lot at it.”

Mr Jones, a resident in the south of the borough who has quit the Labour Party, said: “You have to locate where the people who are going to vote for you are, and you knock on their doors, and get them to vote.

“An independent campaign has no data, and they are up against the party machine.”

He added that there were many within the constituency who still did not realise that Mr Corbyn was running as an independent candidate, or that he was running at all.

Mr Jones said: “A lot of people will turn up [to the polls] and it will be the first time they will realise he’s not the Labour candidate.”

He added that, nationally, Labour have mobilised the message that voters need to vote for them to keep the Tories out of power. Mr Jones branded this message as “dishonest,” explaining that Labour’s huge lead in the polls gave people a greater flexibility.

“If you want him to win, you’ve got to knock on doors. If they don’t have more people knocking on doors than they do now, then they’ll lose.”

A source on Jeremy Corbyn’s campaign team said: “Our early canvass returns shows it’s pretty much neck and neck here between Jeremy as the independent candidate and the Labour candidate. The other parties are miles behind.

“According to our data and projections, if enough supporters of Jeremy and his politics join the campaign and knock on doors, we will win. But there is a real risk of the Labour candidate sneaking a victory if supporters stay at home on the assumption that Jeremy can win without them.”
