JEREMY Corbyn is calling for an end to the privatisation of public services.

The MP for Islington North has issued a renewed demand for water services to be put back into the public’s hands.

The call comes as discussions swirl over the future of Thames Water, a company in £14billion of debt and threatening to hike up bills to cover its deficit. Reports say the government is eyeing a temporary nationalisation of the company to deal with the crisis.

“Water is a public good – it should be treated as such,” Mr Corbyn told the Tribune.

“Residents have suffered the disastrous effects of privatisation for too long: soaring bills, burst pipes and polluted rivers. Meanwhile, shareholders have raked in more profit than ever before. It is not my constituents’ fault that Thames Water has racked up enormous debt.

“It is outrageous that they may now have to pay the price for their collapse just to satisfy corporate greed.

“It’s time to stop bailing out failing private companies and bring them into public ownership instead.”
