JEREMY Corbyn has called for proper funding for parks and green spaces to be given to local authorities.

Speaking in the House of Commons on Tuesday, the MP for Islington North made reference to the controversial use of Finsbury Park for a Tough Mudder event in April which left large chunks of upturned mud in its wake.

He said: “Managing a park is not simple, and if you throw into that mix an underfunding of the park, and pressure on the relevant local authority to raise more money for the park in order to maintain the park, you end up in a self-defeating circle where you’re losing use of the park in order to make money for the park, but you can’t use the park because of the many [events] that are going on.”

Mr Corbyn called for ring-fenced funding from central government to local authorities for parks, saying “our children need to be brought up knowing that we have to live with nature, not on top of nature.”
