WHILE the Sex Pistols are not the most obvious soundtrack to a coronation party, it was none the less the dulcid tones of Anarchy in the UK which got neighbours at the Hungerford Street party bopping the day away on Sunday.

Kusia Pell and her daughter Lyra, 21 months, who won the Hungerford Road Street party’s best cake prize (with a little help from dad)

With Union Jack flags flying and the dress code strictly “royal”, the day was always going to be a fun-filled affair come rain or shine – and luckily for the Lower Holloway neighbourhood the rain clouds kept away long enough for them to raise £1,006 for the Islington food bank in Ronalds Road, Highbury.

Among the attractions were a plant sale, a pets corner featuring the street’s handsome pets, and a raffle selling off a range of locally donated prizes including two framed prints by local artist Andrew Pegram.

Australian Heidi Castle, 50, who organised the party and has lived in the road since 2013, said: “You live in a street and you just don’t know anyone. Street parties are great as you get to know your neighbours, and there’s kids around having a great time, you know, supporting the community really.”

The party was one of more than 70 street celebrations marking the crowning of King Charles III which took place across the borough over the bank holiday weekend.
