The Whittington Hospital says fund will be spent on staff and patients

THE Whittington has launched a “Coronavirus Relief Fund” and is appealing for financial donations to help the Highgate hospital continue “to provide the best possible care”.

A JustGiving webpage, which has raised £2,630 since Friday, said donations would go towards “supporting staff and patients during the coronavirus crisis” and to help ensure the “best possible care to our community”.

NHS hospitals are under intense pressure following a huge surge in attendances and admissions and problems accessing protective equipment.  The trust board recently announced it was booking rooms in hotels near the hospital for NHS workers.

The statement added that coronavirus was “going to be a marathon not a sprint” and that it needed extra support to “continue working at maximum capacity”, adding: “All financial donations received during this time to ensure our staff can continue caring for, and protecting, our community.”

It added: “We are currently facing a crisis unprecedented in modern times. Whittington is confident we we have taken every necessary step to ensure we are in the best place to manage an extreme surge in patients, but this has only been possible by the incredible work of our fantastic staff.”

Whittington managers say they have been also touched by “offers of gifts, treats, items and services for the benefit of our staff” from businesses and individuals. Last week, 20 pizzas were delivered to the hospital for emergency workers. A webpage has been set up through which donations of this kind can be organised.
