Decision to roll out jabs by age angers the police

Friday, 5th March 2021

POLICE officers are angry over the government’s decision not to prioritise them for coronavirus vaccinations.

Last Friday, plans for phase two revealed people aged 40 to 49 will be prioritised, with age being used as a guide ahead of professions.

The national chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales, John Apter, called the decision “a contemptible betrayal of police officers”.

And Martin Hewitt, the chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, said: “This increases the risk of transmission to officers as well as to the public.”

The risks associated with going to work every day are still a cause of fear among officers. The Tribune has reported how in recent months there has been a high number of infections and officers self-isolating in north London and across London. Some have been hospitalised, while at least one officer in neighbouring Camden, PC John Fabrizi, died from the virus.
