Deliveries can worsen the traffic jams
Saturday, 18th December 2021
• I AM writing in response to recent letters in the Tribune about the traffic nightmare of Highbury Corner roundabout, and the roads leading to it, St Pauls and Highbury Grove.
Yes, it is the Highbury low traffic neighbourhood, LTN, which has exacerbated the situation, leading to buses from Finsbury Park or Dalston often being held up by 20 to 30 minutes as they approach the roundabout.
I would like to point out one other cause of these traffic jams. St Pauls Road, going west towards the roundabout, has a bus lane. But this lane is frequently blocked by very large lorries parked for ages outside the Sainsbury’s Local store on St Pauls Road.
Deliveries should be banned in daytime hours. This would help the traffic flow even though the main problems remain an ill-considered new roundabout system and a far too all-encompassing Highbury LTN.
This, as we know, has forced extra traffic onto Blackstock Road and Highbury Grove. However it could be solved by reopening Drayton Park and Aubert Park while keeping some of the smaller streets traffic-free.
