Do our lives have less value than the developer’s profits?

The Holloway Prison site

• WE are local residents living close to the new Holloway Park development.

At the full Islington Council meeting on July 13 we presented a petition on behalf of residents from Trecastle Way, Penderyn Way, Dalmeny Avenue Estate, Holloway Estate, Bakersfield and Kimble House.

This petition was signed by more than 120 residents following door-knocking sessions by a group of neighbours.

The petition was calling for action from the council regarding the impact of the demolition of the ex-Holloway prison site.

As local residents, we have been suffering daily from the impact of the new development: noise, dust, vibrations, cracks in our walls.

Our complaints are very often ignored or dismissed. To this day we are yet to receive a response from the council to our concerns.

We supplied the council with pictures, video footage, list of complaints from local residents, proof that our complaints haven’t been properly recorded by the council. We were told that the council has 21 days to respond to any petition or complaint.

There seems to be one rule for residents and another for the council: we supplied the further information they requested within the 21-day time frame but they have not got back to us within their own defined time frame for responses.

We are now in October and we are still waiting. What can we do to have our concerns addressed? Do our lives have less value than the developer’s profits?
