Don’t delay, Highbury Corner gyratory is in desperate need of change

An artist’s impression of how the revamped Highbury Corner will look when finished
• WE were disappointed to read the letter about Highbury Corner, signed by so many local groups, which criticised the “excessive new fixed cycle lanes south of the river” (Give us respite before we face yet more roadworks, March 2).
We believe that protected cycle tracks are key to encouraging more people to use bikes, and are especially important in Islington which has little good cycling infrastructure.
This is why we are asking candidates at the local election in May to support building at least 5km of protected tracks in the borough over the next two years. See www.cycleislington.uk/2018/5asks.
Furthermore, we support the council’s determination to press ahead with any scheme offering significant improvements for those walking, cycling, accessing or interchanging public transport at Highbury Corner. Such a redesign has been supported by the opposition councillor, Caroline Russell.
It is fully in line with the Mayor of London’s Transport Strategy, which aims to achieve motor traffic reduction alongside improved facilities for walking, cycling and public transport.
We are pleased that Councillor Claudia Webbe is aligning Islington’s transport strategy with that of the mayor’s. As Highbury Corner is a gyratory in desperate need of change we hope there will be no further delays to improving it.
