Don’t give up on the Metropolitan Police Service

Borough Commander Andy Carter

Chief Supt Andy Carter

• LIKE many people, I was upset and disappointed when I read Baroness Casey’s report into culture and standards at the Met this week.

It exposes widespread failings that we have to address. As a senior officer, I am ashamed and angry that we have let down communities across Camden and Islington, as well as the honest and dedicated majority of our officers and staff, who work tirelessly every day to keep people safe.

The appalling examples of discrimination against Londoners, victims and our own workforce, must act as a catalyst for meaningful and long-lasting change.

We have already begun making significant reforms and it is important that this report strengthens our resolve.

I have been clear with officers and staff that there is no place in policing for people who abuse the trust and confidence the public put in us.

We haven’t been rigorous enough in the past, but through extra investment in our professional standards teams and the launch of an independent whistleblowing phone line, we are determined to root out those who corrupt our integrity.

Being the local policing commander for Islington and Camden is a privilege. It’s a role I take incredibly seriously and I personally apologise to those we have failed.

The Met plays a hugely important role in making both boroughs great places to live, work and visit. It’s clear we haven’t done enough previously to ensure everyone feels safe and protected.

I know Baroness Casey’s findings will not come as a surprise to many people and we want to listen and learn to ensure we don’t make the same mistakes again.

We have recently launched our ambitious Turnaround Plan and are working with our partners and the communities we serve to shape the future of the Met. This will support our focus on delivering less crime, more trust and higher standards.

This is my one plea: don’t give up on us. I am confident that together we can build a police service of which the people of Camden and Islington can feel proud.
