Don’t scapegoat Afghans

• AFGHAN people escaping their deaths must not be scapegoated for the continuing housing crisis, which was created by Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government in a bid to boost Britain’s economy in the 1980s.
The housing crisis continues to be a significant source of wealth for Islington’s private landlords and is the driving force behind inequality in our borough and across the country.
I am from Islington and I’ve worked making documentaries filmed in Afghanistan. I have seen a lot of grumbling online about Islington Council’s promise to house people from Afghanistan.
Someone from Islington might be on the housing list, but not at risk of being tortured and killed for working with the British Army, British news organisations and charities. And their daughters not allowed to go to school or worse – forcibly married to the militia.
The United Kingdom went into their country and put these liberal and often highly educated and people in this position. We have a responsibility to save these people’s lives and it means resettlement. I hope everyone will show the kindness these good people deserve.
