• IN your May 14 issue there are two letters supporting Britain’s participation in the Falklands War (Interest in the oil resources around the Falklands was never a secret and The Crown has responsibility for defence of the Falklands).

Their arguments are strong and the integrity of their authors is not in doubt.

But I cannot but wonder whether their case is vitiated when Britain’s defence of the Falkland islanders is compared with Britain’s expulsion of the Chagos islanders, of whom Wikipedia says: “The Chagos was home to the Chagossians… for more than a century and a half until the United Kingdom evicted them between 1967 and 1973 to allow the United States to build a military base on Diego Garcia, the largest of the Chagos Islands.

“…Since being expelled, Chagossian natives have been prevented from returning to the islands.”
