THE Liberal Democrats have named a high-profile doctor as their candidate for the Hampstead Town council by-election.
Dr Jeffrey Fine said: “Having lived in Hampstead and NW3 for over 30 years this is a real chance for me to put something into the community.”
He goes into a duel with Conservative candidate Simon Marcus over the vacant council seat left by the resignation of Tory councillor Kirsty Roberts.
“Local shops have gone through a tough time over recent years, but hopefully things have turned the corner – but I think there is so much more that can be done and I’m willing to play my part,” said Dr Fine. I see the improvements and transformation on Marylebone High Street and think, ‘why not South End Green and Hampstead?’.”
Dr Fine lives in Gayton Road and partly trained at the Royal Free Hospital. He later worked in Harley Street where work on diet and obesity has attracted national attention.
The Tories have already confirmed their candidate as Mr Marcus. He said: “Whether it is a full-time police station, a vibrant high street with local, independent shops or a happy friendly place that cherishes its past and is optimistic about the future, I am committed to improving our local community.
“I have a proven history of taking action to improve communities, having spent many years on the frontline helping to reduce youth crime, keeping people safe and helping businesses and families thrive. My optimistic, common-sense approach brings people together.”
It is tipped to be a battle between Conservatives and Lib Dems because the ward is currently split between the two parties, two to one in the Tories’ favour. The poll takes place on September 27.
Labour’s candidate is Maddy Raman, who lives in South Hill Park. He said: “My mother’s a doctor, and I’m passionate about the NHS. Living so close to the Royal Free, I know what a great job our health service does and I’ve campaigned actively in the community to protect the NHS and our Royal Free Hospital as part of the ‘Keep Our NHS Public’ campaign.
“As Hampstead’s local councillor I will do all I can to protect our local services and amenities in the face the cuts from the Tories and Lib Dems, whether it’s our vibrant High Street or vital National Health Service.”
Actress Sophie Dix is standing for the Green Party. She said: “Watching favourite shops and cafés closed, and livelihoods crushed by the ever-accelerating rents, it would be fantastic to think there may be shops put aside for local produce and industry.”
