(or so I’ve read)
That world events unfolding
Are mainly ruled by global trends
Whose broad opinions, aims and ends
Will not be ours for holding.

Celebrities tweet loud and twitter
Be like us and follow fame,
Worship us in fame and fitness,
Be a dumb, colluding witness
To our daily game.

We might possibly be aliens
So some scientists have claimed,
Wanderers and migrants stranded,
Refugees as yet unlanded,
Strangers all unnamed.

Statistics tell us what befell us
In some economic war,
Why the outcome was decided
All by predetermined factors
Which had happened long before.

Let us win back common sense
Trust ourselves and set us free;
Free from being dupes and minions
Of adept received opinions
(And give me back my me).
