During lockdown a nearby property has been let as a party venue
Friday, 12th March 2021
• DURING this lockdown and other restrictive Covid tiers, one of our neighbouring landlords has been letting a property as a party venue.
Often 20 people are in and out, all-night, smoking weed, drinking alcohol, screaming, playing loud music and slamming doors.
This has been horrible for everyone living nearby and a real nuisance having to keep reporting it to the police and the local enforcement authority.
One of the sad things is that this property was once a council home, housing a family, but since the Margaret Thatcher government’s Right-to-Buy scheme, introduced in 1980, many family homes have been sold off and are now not being used entirely as someone’s home, but for parties or short-term holiday lets.
This is a great shame considering we are in a very bad housing crisis. It’s causing even more shortages of living accommodation, making what remains of rented housing even more out of reach.
This city is now a playground for the rich. In a residential area it is not right that they can rent for so many days a year as a short-term tenancy. And it can be £500 a night.
They can get more days by letting without an agency so that the local authorities are not informed; and then there would be also be no record of taxable rental income.
What is going on now is a real scam and we should not have to put up with all this anti-social behaviour and have tax avoidance at the same time that our services are being deprived.
I would like to thank the politicians who have been helping in this matter. It’s a shame that Boris Johnson’s government is not doing anywhere near enough to address this.
