FRIENDS of an imprisoned Palestine Action activist who ran in this week’s election have told of their devastation that bail has been denied.

Amu Gib has been locked up in HMP Bronzefield for nine months without trial, after they were accused of breaking into an RAF air base.

Gib ran as an Independent candidate in Finsbury Park, but if elected today (Friday), they will have to perform their duties while still behind bars.

Bail was denied at a hearing last Friday, meaning that Gib could stay imprisoned until their trial date scheduled for January 2027.

Their friend Jessie Dolliver said it was “heartbreaking” that bail had been denied.

They told the Tribune: “It is a devastating reflection of how cowardly and authoritarian this government has become. The government shouldn’t spend tax payer money flying planes over Gaza.”

In an exclusive interview with the Tribune in April, Gib said that, if elected, they would replicate a model described by Gary Donnelly, a councillor in Derry.

They explained: “He has a core team around him of 10 people who have figured out what people’s needs are and trained themselves to meet them. They have housing inspectors, plumbers, and they signpost people. The understanding for me is that nothing is ever done by one person. People can write to me or send letters, and we’d figure it out.”

There were also suggestions of joining surgeries via video link.

“If there’s not a way already in place for people to be local councillors from prison, I’m sure we can figure out a pathway,” said Gib.
