Eric Gordon delivered fist class journalism
Friday, 16th April 2021
• I WAS shocked and saddened to read of the death of Eric Gordon in last week’s newspapers, (Tributes to the editor who gave Islington a new campaigning voice).
Eric’s name was not all that well known because his principal column was delivered under the nom de plume of John Gulliver.
His achievement in providing first-class journalism to Camden and Islington, in an era when newspapers generally, and local papers in particular, have been under the cosh, has been truly remarkable.
He truly lived up to the motto, “Open to all, coerced by none”.
When in 2006 the Islington Liberals were rather miffed by his report of the election result (they retained control by the mayor’s casting vote), they overlooked the fact that the headline was a mirror image of the Camden New Journal, reporting Labour’s loss in Camden also to “No overall control”.
He will be much missed and we must all hope that he has somehow made provision for the CNJ, Islington Tribune and Westminster Extra papers to continue to serve us in the way to which we have become accustomed.
