Islington Town Hall

FIFTEEN Afghan families will be found housing in Islington by the end of the year, the council has said.

Thousands of Afghans have been trying to flee the Taliban after it seized control of the country earlier this month.

The Town Hall said it would work with charities and health services to give Afghan refugees the care they need.

The government has agreed to find homes for 20,000 as part of an Afghan Citizens’ Resettlement Scheme.

Islington communities chief Cllr Una O’Halloran said the humanitarian crisis had been “heart-breaking to see” and urged prime minister Boris Johnson to “step up” and make sure the council is properly funded, adding: “Islington has a long and proud history of offering sanctuary to those in need, and stands ready to provide assistance once again.”

A spokesperson for the charity Migrant Help said: “Councils and individuals across the UK continue to add to the offers of help and support to Afghan refugees in a brilliant show of empathy, humanity and kindness.”
