A HISTORIC building is set to open this summer as millions of pounds’ worth of conservation works and masonry repairs enter their final phase.

Union Chapel, in Highbury, has been restoring its Sunday School building into a new community venue that will be used for art and culture events.

Meanwhile, the Sunday School Stories project will open to the public later this year through a dedicated space and reading room, bookable visits, and archive-related workshops.

The project has benefited from a £170,000 grant from Historic England as well as a £2.3million grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Throughout the works, which have taken many months, builders have even discovered previously hidden objects which will form part of an archive.

The major structural and conservation works are now complete, but there are some final touches to finish restoring all of the original architectural features.

Ken Beech, chair of trustees at the project, said: “Union Chapel Project is delighted and grateful to receive a substantial grant from Historic England to assist with the restoration of the Sunday School within the Chapel complex. The funds will cover repairs, sustainability and also improve accessibility to the fabulous area which we expect to be complete in summer 2026”.
