Rough sleepers under the railway bridge in Stroud Green Road, Finsbury Park

THE Town Hall has “adjourned” a High Court case where they planned to apply for an injunction to ban anti-social behaviour and begging under the railway bridge in Stroud Green Road, Finsbury Park.

The initial plan to lodge an injunction against rough sleeping in the area met fierce opposition from volunteers who work with the homeless, who warned they could be criminalised. On Wednesday there were still 15 people bed­ding down in the 100-metre stretch of road.

Cllr Diarmaid Ward, executive member for housing and development, said the injunction would “only ever be used as a last resort”.

He said: “Every­one agrees the situation at Stroud Green Road Bridge is unsustain­able. Highly vulnerable people are being exploited and are at great risk. Islington Council will continue to invest in tailored support for homeless people.”

The council did not respond to a request for details of when they plan to relist the application.
