SIXTY firefighters tackled a blaze at a derelict building in Archway.

Eight fire engines and crews from Holloway, Hornsey and Kentish Town attended the site on Highgate Hill, near the Whittington Hospital, yesterday (Thursday) at around 6.16am.

A small part of the ground floor was damaged, but there are thought to be no injuries.

The fire affected traffic heading towards the entrance of Whittington Hospital, but it is not thought to have spread there.

In April, fire chiefs warned leaders at the hospital that urgent work was needed to prevent the risk of “injury or death” by fire across the premises. However, there is no evidence that this fire is linked to the hospital or its fire safety measures.

London Fire Brigade said the blaze was under control by 9.32am, but officers remained on the scene until around 10.30am. The cause is currently unknown, but officers said investigations are continuing.
