First, let’s get shot of Brexit, then plan a new referendum

Friday, 11th January 2019

• A NEW Brexit referendum seems increasingly inevitable. For months, it has seemed the best way. Because our representatives and leaders have abdicated their responsibilities for so long, it now seems the only way.

Now, everybody is talking about extending Article 50, but actually it would be totally humiliating to beg the EU for an extension, and all we have to do is rescind it.

We have been told we can rescind it by the European Court of Justice. We could even stay with all the same multiple privileges we have now.

It’s incredible. What a way for the Brexiteers to kick sand in the face of the EU! Do they not realise we could stay, keep all our rebates and exceptions (not in euro and not in Schengen), no matter how fed up with us they all must be. It’s perfect for Brexiteers.

Then we can have a new referendum and, if we want, start the whole Article 50 process again, but get the negotiation right this time – on our own terms, in our own time. No brainer.

This is what the media will be talking about soon. Most people want to be shot of Brexit. We can, tomorrow, by rescinding Article 50. Then plan a new referendum at our leisure.

I am proud to be European, proud to be in a constituency which was the fifth highest in the country to support Remain, but ashamed of a government which has let a fraudulently-run, undemocratic, barely constitutional expression of wish by a lied-to, ill-informed, limited electorate lead it by the nose, and has now humiliated us all by begging for the impossible all round the world.
