A FORMER national newspaper editor is the newest addition to the staff at a university in Holloway.

London Metropolitan University has welcomed Alan Rusbridger, who headed up The Guardian for two decades, into their journalism teaching team.

The seasoned editor is now running courses for second-year students, focused on the relationship between journalism, power, and the public interest.

Mr Rusbridger is due to give a keynote lecture at the campus next Thursday, where he will ask: Can facts survive an age of information chaos?

Mr Rusbridger said: “In a world where people increasingly don’t know who or what to trust, it’s never been more vital to recruit and train professional journalists.

“I’m delighted to be joining the team at London Metropolitan University and helping to nurture a new generation of much-needed editorial talent.”

Meanwhile, Wendy Sloane, who heads up the journalism department at the university, added: “We are thrilled to welcome Alan to our team.

“Our students will have the opportunity to learn from a veteran journalist who understands the importance of speaking truth to power and holding those in authority to account.

“We are also excited that he will be delivering a keynote lecture open to the wider university community, giving students and the public a chance to hear from one of the most influential editors of the modern era.”

Prior to his arrival at London Metropolitan University, 72-year-old Mr Rusbridger served as principal of Lady Margaret Hall at the University of Oxford, and chaired the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.
