THERE was a flurry of community support for those left without water and electricity after the flood in Caledonian Road this week.
Sarah Hepburn Stylist (SHS) in Essex Road opened its doors on Wednesday morning offering free hair washes. And Islington food bank The People’s Army organised showers, washing machines, charging points, hot drinks and food without charge on Thursday and Friday in Archway.
Hazel Jhugroo, who runs the food bank and works supporting homeless and vulnerable people in Islington, said: “I saw the floods and I thought, ‘how can I help the people struggling?’ I used to live just off Caledonian Road so it’s close to home.
“I saw a Facebook post saying that food has been the worst part. I work in a mental health centre kitchen. I can cook extra food – I even have someone bringing vegan options – and someone’s bringing towels and toothpaste, and we have a shower.
“Most people don’t realise the long-term impacts of the floods. I can help get furniture for people to rebuild their homes.”
Over in Essex Road, SHS founder Sara Castañares said: “We know it has been really tough for those without water and this is one thing I could do to help.
“I brought in extra staff to help those affected get on with their planned activities despite being unable to shower at home.
“My salon has recently been renovated – as a business owner, I could not imagine what you would do if everything was destroyed.
“Our salon doors are open to anyone who needs to come in and wash their hair, no charge, just come as you are.”
