From the COP stage in Dubai to London’s own climate event
Economist and author has been discussing the importance of using ‘missions’ to guide the climate fightback

Mariana Mazzucato
MARIANA Mazzucato has been at the COP28 summit in Dubai this week sharing a stage with presidents and heads of state – including the prime minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley.
There the economist and author has been discussing the importance of using “missions” to guide the climate fightback with world leaders.
She used her time in UAE to argue for fairer climate financing, warning governments have spent $7trillion to subsidise fossil fuels this year – significantly more than the $4.3trillion that would be needed to “close the financing gap”.
Shortly after touching down in the UK Ms Mazzucato will make her way to our London COP to discuss her book, Mission Economy: A Moonshot Guide to Changing Capitalism, between 1pm and 2pm.
Her book argues that to tackle climate change, the world needs to mobilise its resources in a way that replicates the Apollo moon landing in 1969, when all aspects of society and the economy were reoriented in order to get a man onto the moon.
The book ends with a quote by Franklin D. Roosevelt, the American president, who said: “It is common sense to take a method and try it: if it fails, admit it frankly and try another.
“But above all, try something.”
‘Are you doing it again?’
THE Islington Tribune is staging the LDNCOP on Saturday after we kept being asked by readers “are you doing it again?” Hosting climate change conferences is a little out of the ordinary for local newspapers, but we want to play our part in an issue which should be in the minds of everybody in power. At our first COP last year (pictured), people responded by packing the audiences and asked us to do it all over again.
And don’t forget to browse the sustainable christmas fair
EVEN if you do not want to come to the debate and discussions around climate change at the LDNCOP, there’s a big Christmas Fair in the main hall on Saturday for visitors to browse – packed full of stands offering a pile of perfect presents. There will be lots of handmade gifts and all of them environmentally friendly. Remember, entrance is FREE.
