Fun in the park… without barbecues

Highbury Fields will no longer be available for barbecues in its entirety
• ON Friday, one of the hottest days ever in the UK, our environment executive councillor Claudia Webbe tweeted reassurances that, while Highbury Fields will no longer be available for barbecues in its entirety following the recent settlement with Highbury residents fed up with air pollution, barbecues are still welcome in Islington parks, (Town Hall to restrict use of barbecues in Highbury Fields, July 6).
No mention of picnics or other ways of having fun involving food in the open air which do not require burning. And as for the sum paid by Islington Council for legal fees of residents who took the council to court over the Highbury barbecues because of Cllr Webbe’s refusal to engage with them, where will it come from?
Presumably, £300,000 will come from the mental health budget, cut at the right moment, (You can’t hide it: £300k cuts will hit mental health day services, July 6). The rest I don’t know. But I feel confident it all makes sense in the heads of Islington Labour councillors.
